CREATIVITY

To be a good interior designer you have to be a daring person, be ready to try new ideas and combine colors with a purposeful meaning or eco-friendly environs. Many designs have been done and you can find peoples work online to combine to bring your ideas alive but not to mirror their ideas. I will start with a simple idea if you have a living room project. The structure/design of the house will determine the theme and type of interior solution offer. If the house is a contemporary building you should ensure your items and designs are based on contemporary and not vintage or classic. (We will give you insights to different types of interior designs). Do not limit your creativity. Your mistake is a design if well managed.

BUSINESS NAME

Every business needs to be known and registered, Register your business, get a branding graphic designer to design a logo, business card, letterhead, your invoice /quotation. This will give you a very good image and make your clients see you as a serous organization.

QUESTIONNAIRE

You need to have a questionnaire of what your client requires in terms of color , finishes, design types and also duration of work .

TECHNICAL KNOW HOW

Getting the skills to be an interior design is simple! My advice is, do a lot of listening and learn from the artisans you are giving to use to help you finish any project you take on. However, you will also need to do a lot of research on specific materials to be used on every project.

The questions you need to ask yourself on every material is (why this material? Is it cheap or expensive? Will it be cost effective? Will it serve the purpose of use? Will it last longer?) Many artisans use cheap materials in order to save money and forget integrity of the brand so you need to monitor them in details and specifications.

Some projects are specification driven, that is, you will be required to use certain material or products from a giving brand, If the product is not of a good quality you need to call the attention of the client in other to deliver a good job. Getting Skills is either you get someone to mentor you or you learn from artisan and do your research very well. We will explain a lot of information and details on DIY and about different materials.

MARKETING STRATEGY

This is where most entrepreneurs miss it. Who to sell to, how to sell and what to sell? I will do a simple analogy of a water funnel. To be a good marketer for any business, firstly you need to know your products very well, you need to know who your target audience (those that needs your product and how it can be solution to their problems) age range, their economy status (rich, average, poor), what do they do mostly and lastly, and how to reach them.

Back to the analogy, I said I was going to give on the funnel, ensure you get to meet as many prospective clients as you can after streamlining them down with the above-highlighted questions. Continue to add the clients to your funnel until you get a job, you can be lucky to get a job before your funnel gets filled but do not give up because the more the prospects it shows how far you have gone in marketing your product or services.

There are many platforms you can use for strategic marketing (INSTAGRAM, FACEBOOK, VCONNECT e.tc).

You can get to learn some easy 3D design software or pay 3D designer to help you actualize your ideas in pictures. You can use any of the available software to mention a few (chief architect: home interior designer: sketchup: 3Dmax, etc.)

PAYMENT

Profit is the reason for every business in this business sector clients do not make 100% payment but give you a certain % and also added as the job progresses and balance on completion.

Some construction companies hold back 5% of your total cost as insurance for the quality of your service and a shady 6months free maintenance so be careful. I will advice you do (70% advanced payment, 15% of 50% milestone on the job and 15% on completion)

You need to take note of some details when dealing with your client in interior world .

  • Get your client to consent to a 3D design/drawings or choice of material to be used.
  • Give a very visible duration to complete the project.
  • Always keep your client informed if there is any change in materials or duration of project.
  • Ensure your site is clean at all times.
  • Request for power supply from your client at the beginning of the project and if they cannot provide you need to add the cost to your invoice.
  • Do a site survey as many times as you can (before the advanced payment, during choice of material selection, after you receive your first payment
